The WORLD BOTANICAL GARDENS is situated on 300 acres of former sugar-cane fields, located 16 miles north of Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii. The spectacular triple-tier Umauma Falls is located on the northern border of the Gardens, and an access road was developed to the falls shortly after the Gardens opened to the public on July 4, 1995.
The MAIN GARDEN is phylogenetically arranged, or arranged by family relationships. This MAIN GARDEN, currently under development, consists of approximately 150 acres. As one drives up the Evolutionary Road, one encounters sequentially the

Other sections of the Garden, currently under development and not yet open to the public, include the CHILDREN'S MAZE, JAPANESE GARDEN, HAWAIIAN GARDEN, FRUIT & NUT ORCHARD and the FALLS PICNIC FIELDS.
Sections which are currently open include: FALLS OVERLOOK, RAINFOREST WALK, ARBORETUM, and the LOWER GARDEN.
Currently about 3,000 species of plants are in the Garden collection; the Garden will be capable of accommodating about 30,000 species when the Main Garden has been fully developed.
Please keep in mind, as you view this developing Garden, that only a few years ago (1995), the entire area consisted of abandoned sugarcane fields thick with weeds which were fifteen to twenty feet high. Most of the trees were started from seeds or cuttings in our own nurseries since 1995, except for the trees in the gulches. You are invited to return again and again to watch the progress of this Garden for the new millenium.
