Mom calls these waves and surge BOOMERS !
|
|
During the wintertime here in Kona, we can experience some pretty huge waves, which result in waves crashing against the black lava, coming up high on the gently sloping beaches, so everyone has to be aware and WATCH THE WATER.
THE RULE IS: DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN. Waves that are bigger, stronger that seem to come out of the blue are called ROGUE waves, and they have swept people out to sea, never to be seen again. So when mom takes these BOOMER photographs, she is really careful to first watch the waves, like surfers do, before even getting close to the water. Mom has this special technique of looking where the "dry" (or drier) area is when photographing on the lava. And even then, she treats the ocean with great respect.

Here it goes! Mom had to run fast after this wave hit the lava! This is why you ALWAYS want to watch the waves!

Here in Kona, everybody is pretty aware of WEATHER, because it can change rapidly, and cause situations such as flooding and power outages, but also can result in good surf for surfers or a colorful rainbow in the sky.
Most Kona people check on the weather often, and it is easy to do over the Internet.
