ALOHA! Welcome to KONA KITTY'S WEBSITE !
KONA KITTY enjoys beautiful SUNSETS in Hawai'i !
There's a lot of sunset photos below -
Mom tries to get out every night to capture this magic!
Take your time, scroll down, and enjoy - they are all different !
GOLDEN RADIANCE - sun sets between two palm trees
Wonderful pink hues after golden glow - sun slipping into clouds right above horizon

KALOKO-HONOKOHAU NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
This national park was established in 1978 to protect 1,160 acres that served as the site of an important Hawaiian settlement before the arrival of European explorers. The area was once a successful settlement whose inhabitants harvested sea life, cultivated vegetables, and raised chickens, dogs, and pigs. These people actively traded with others who lived further inland on the island.
Remaining evidence of the settlement includes house platforms, rock carvings, trails, canoe landings, and religious sites. The park also contains two fishponds that utilized the tides to trap fish.
From the residential subdivision of KONA HEAVENS, you are able to see the reflection of the sunset upon the ponds. The abundant tidal areas and wetlands in the park remain an important home for many waterbirds, including several species that are found nowhere else. The fishponds also serve as a habitat for waterfowl. This park about a ten minute drive from Kona Heavens.
Text information was taken from "Guide to the National Park Areas Western States"

The sun slipped into the sea, slowly, but not so slowly, as the green turtles silently and graciously feed upon the nutritious algae. After feeding, their next move might be to come on shore for a rest.
This is a time to feel at one with the ocean and all of the wonders that the ocean provides...
The exquisite reflection of the clouds in the lava surrounded sea...
Some evenings the Kona sunsets are softer, more subtle colors than the explosions of color on other evenings.
This sunset taken at Pahoehoe Park, just past mile marker 3.5 on Alii Drive, was soft and calming.
The small park has grassy areas and benches to sit and enjoy the sunset.

Afterwards, you could go to Jameson's Restaurant, just down the road, and enjoy a tasty dinner by the ocean.

Walking along the wide open craggy lava shoreline at the Four Seasons Hualalai Hotel at sunset is a pleasure!

Tonight the sky lit up a beautiful golden orange - which then was reflected in the ocean.

The Four Seasons is approximately a 20 minute drive from Kona Heavens.
As the sun dropped behind a cloud bank, the sky lit up even more, reflecting off the puffy clouds.

Part of the Kona scene - the Bean Cruises at Sunset -
what could be more magical than being out on the water enjoying the Kona sunset???
Now here is a really special place, just minutes from Kona; now part of the National Parks.
Ancient heaius, marshland, turtle feeding and resting grounds,
and another great place to watch the sun set.

End of another perfect day in Kona

SUNSET SCENES FROM THE OLD AIRPORT, KONA
The Old Airport in Kona is a perfect place to spend the end of the day
and watch the sun set.
Layer after layer of rolling waves constanly find their way to lava rock - pools, crags, and jags.
The sun mirrors itself in calmer waters.....glistening, a golden orange band of light.....
As the sun drops lower, the color palette changes from golden orange to pinks and purples,
thus ending another magical day in Kona
Storm clouds covered the Kona sky in the late afternoon...
then, the sun slipped from beneath the clouds in an explosion of golden light.....
Too much going on at once - rainbow over Kona Heavens (mauka - hillside) and awesome sunset happening seaside (makai).....

Check out the RAINBOWS PAGE!
And, as the tiny droplets of water fell on Kona Heavens, the sun slipped into the sea,
and another perfect day dissolved into night.
In contrast to the sunset the night before, this one went quickly.
Dark storm clouds overhead, sun just dropped into the sea, colors came and went.
After a gloriously crystal clear, sunny day in Kona, we were blessed by a fabulous sunset that seemed to last forever.
Part of the mystery of Hawai'i.....
A lava face looks westward,
watching the "cloud people" dance across the sun.....
The lava formations in the foreground
almost mirror the "cloud people" in the sky.....
Wintertime - and the waves roll and come crashing against the dark lava.

The surfers love the waves - but have to be careful of the sharp lava!
The bright orange and red colors are reflected in the sea...
The whole sky is lit up with color!
What a way to start the New Year!
Kailua Bay, with cruise ship to right

Blue sky background, clouds radiating sun's fading rays
Sun drops to sea, creating luminous ray on the Pacific Ocean.....
Golden hues light up the sky.....

The last sunset of the year !

Lone palm tree

In Kailua Bay, the sun slips slowly into the sea...

Alii Drive, just a little past mile marker 2 1/2
A small bay, great waves when the surf is up - a favorite surfing spot!
Luminous sky - magical clouds
And as the sun ball drops to the sea, colors and patterns change,
turning from yellow and orange to pink and purple.

The Kona magic continues.....
More soft pastel magic - sun sinking into clouds resting on the Pacific Ocean
Befitting the evening, Christmas eve, the setting sun was captured behind this simple cross
on Alii Drive in Kona, just past mile marker 4.
It's wintertime, and the surf is up !

Caution: never turn your back on the ocean!
These waves have been known to pick up people and throw them some 30 feet!
Just about touchdown time in Kona!
Touchdown ! And there was a GREEN FLASH tonight!
END OF ALII DRIVE
When the surf is up, as it often is during the winter months, visiting this area at the end of Alii Drive, slightly past mile marker 7, is an awesome experience at any time of the day, but especially at sunset.

Steep craggy lava formations meet the sea, creating huge splashing walls of water.
Waterfalls like mini Niagra Falls are created over the lower lava in this very special Kuamo'o Bay.
A BIT OF HAWAI'IAN HISTORY.....

After the death of Kamehameha I in 1819 and before the arrival of Christian missionaries, doubts about the ancient religion led to its abandonment by the regent, Ka'ahumanu and Liholiho (Kamehameha II)

Traditionalists rallied to Kekuaokalani, custodian of the war god.

Here, in the Battle of Kuamo'o, they were defeated by the monarchy troops led by the premier, Kalanimoku and the old religion died in a blaze of musket fire. Both sides had firearms, and more than 300 were killed, including Kekuaokalani and his wife Manono.

The dead are interred in the rock carins on the lava field at Kuamo'o Bay.

All is relatively quiet now.
WINTER SOLSTICE SUNSET
LOCATION: Public access path at the Four Seasons Hotel, 20 minutes drive from downtown Kona
TROPICAL SPLENDOR SUNSET - lots of moisture in the air creating tremendous golden glow
LOCATION: About 5 minutes away from Kona town center, on Alii Drive
Sunset view between palm trees right off Alii Drive - the main "beach road" heading south away from Kona town.
Surprize! This photo was taken 15 minutes after the sun set - it seemed like all of the colors were gone and grayed out - and then suddenly, colors reappeared !
MUTED SUNSET COLORS through uprooted sea washed tree roots on Alii Drive
LOCATION: The lagoon in the OTEC area

This shallow lagoon was sacred to the ancient Hawaiians.

Today, it is a good place for children to splash and play in the water, protected by the ring of lava which catches the large waves. Only small ripples lap the sandy shore.

Caution: The bottom of the lagoon can be slippery ! (There is a mixture of fine sand and lava, which can be covered with a slippery sea moss.)
Sunset taken same evening as above photo, a few minutes later.

During the "winter" season, the shoreline often has "boomer" waves which crash against the black lava, creating sea mist and intricate designs in front of the setting sun.

Photo shot from under Hapu'u tree fern leaves
with setting sun coming through small leaf bamboo.
LOCATION: From the Zen garden, off the master suite at the Kona Heavens Anini Street home.
Tropical breezes make the palm trees sway
and the clouds move in interesting formations
as the sun sets slowly into the Pacific Ocean.....
KONA KITTY enjoys the
Kona Heavens sunsets!
One of those "big sky" sunset nights -
horizontal and vertical photos taken
from Kona Heavens home lanai.....

Sunset colors range from evening to evening - sometimes the colors are bright and vivid, sometimes the hues are soft and more pastel colors.

One thing for sure, you never know what a sunset is going to be like, and how long it will last.

Sitting on the lanai is a great place to view these spectacular sunsets.
Minutes away from Kona Heavens, the "old airport" is a great place to walk, view rolling waves, and catch the sunset at sea level!

If the waves are especially active, enjoy viewing brave surfers riding the waves.

Not a sunset, but one of those heavenly
sky things that happens here in Hawaii!

Check back to this page often - new sunsets will be added!
