Rainbows are always magical - and they are an integral part of Hawaii.
Sharing some special rainbows on the Big Island.....

Chasing rainbows in Waimea - also know as Kamuela - approximately 40 to 45 minutes drive from Kona. Waimea has more rain than Kona - thus more opportunity for rainbows!

Mom was coming from Waimea, headed to Kona. Get wet, get blown, but get the RAINBOW!
Here's a beautifully high arc rainbow - Mom can't even get most of it in one camera shot!

Mom was still getting wet and almost blown away with trying to get these shots; but she says it is an incredible experience to be so close to these rainbows....

There's Mauna Kea in the background at 13,000+ feet, with the observatories on top....and the other half of the very high arced rainbow....very soon disappearing into the mist.....

A very etheric, misty rainbow, dropping right into the cruise ship which arrived approximately 6 a.m.

This rainbow was shortly before sunset at 1,000 foot elevation.
The orange sun lights up the palm leaves,
while creating the soft rainbow arc.

Etheric rainbows appear and disappear at RAINBOW FALLS,
right in Hilo on the east side of the Big Island.
Best time for viewing is in the early morning when the sun has just risen.

NOTE: These photos were taken after an extremely heavy rainfall
in November 2000. Normally, the falls are not this full.

Sometimes rainbows seem to appear out of nowhere - this rainbow was seen in the rear view mirror driving from Hilo to Honoka'a in November 2000.
Late afternoon, sun just about to slide behind Mauna Kea....a little rain, a little sun, and the rainbow colors appeared !
